The Control of Noise at Work Regulations
implement the Physical Agents (Noise) Directive (2003/10/EC)
Noise levels are described in terms of decibels,
and the regulations require different actions depending on the noise level in the workplace. Firstly they require a risk assessment where the noise is likely to exceed 80 dB(A) -
if you need to raise your voice to talk at arms length you're above 80 dB(A) -
the assessment must include factors such as:
- the level, type and duration of exposure, including peak sound pressure
- the effects on employees at particular risk
- the interaction between noise and the use of ototoxic substances or between noise and vibration
- any indirect effects on health and safety regarding audible warning signals
- the suitability of control measures
Other requirements include:
- Elimination or control of exposure to noise at the workplace
- Provision of hearing protection
- Health surveillance
- Information, instruction and training
