The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations
implement the Physical Agents (Vibration) Directive (2002/44/EC)
The Vibration in the workplace can cause both discomfort and illness. Depending on the nature of the exposure it is
classified as hand-arm vibration (HAV) or whole-body vibration (WBV). The illness most closely associated with hand-arm vibration is vibration white
finger. Whole body vibration is associated with a wide range of problem such as back pain and motion discomfort. Both types of vibration
exposure require risk assessments that include factors such as::
- the magnitude, type and duration of exposure, including any exposure to intermittent vibration or repeated shocks
- the effects on employees at particular risk
- any indirect effects on health and safety regarding the proper handling of controls, the reading of indicators, the stability of structures and the security of joints
Other requirements include:
- Elimination or control of exposure to noise at the workplace
- Health surveillance
- Information, instruction and training
